Burts Crisps sponsors the Devon Life Food & Drink Awards 2012

Devon based artisan crisp brand, Burts Chips, is pleased to be supporting the ‘Best Independent Food Shop’ category at this year’s Devon Life Food and Drink Awards. Passionate about their Devonshire heritage, Burts Managing Director Melvyn Glynn commented, “We’re thrilled to be supporting this particular award because it’s the independent food stores in Devon that are really championing local produce and flying the flag for authentic, well-made, locally sourced food and drink. They are helping to put the excitement and passion back into food and that’s what Burts is all about!”
Believe it or not Burts started life in a shed, where founders Richard Burt, Jonty White and Nick Hurst set upon their mission to create the tastiest, crunchiest crisp around! With only one traditional chip fryer they cooked the crisps lovingly in pure sunflower oil, just one batch at a time and it’s these artisan methods of cooking that the company still stands by today. Now fourteen years on Burts is the fastest growing premium crisp brand in the UK and the shed has become a state of the art, purpose built factory in Roughborough in the heart of Devon.
If there’s one thing that Burts know it’s strong, mouth-watering flavours and you’re always spoiled for choice with Burts’ range of adventurous chips that nod to the traditional, but with a cheeky twist! Choose from Sweet Chilli, Sweet Red Paprika, Mature Cheddar, Smoked Streaky Bacon, Salt and Pepper, Salt and Malt Vinegar, Sea Salted, No Salt and the latest seasonal addition for summer, Pesto. Shoppers should keep their eyes peeled for emerging new flavours on shop shelves and in pubs and delis nationwide as Burts is constantly introducing seasonal flavours to keep consumers guessing and coming back for more.
Burts also prides itself on its Devon heritage, sourcing potatoes from south west farms and where possible, flavouring its chips with the very best in local produce. Take Burts Sweet Chilli crisps for example, they pack a serious flavour punch with fresh sweet chillies from the South Devon Chilli Farm and the scrumptious Smoky Bacon that are given a delicious meaty kick with dry cured bacon from Denhays Farms in Dorset. Using only the finest natural ingredients, Burts is committed to perfection and that’s why each and every crisp is seasoned evenly and immaculately, so no flavour is lost at the bottom of the crisp packet.
This passion for perfection has led to some impressive ‘foodie’ fans, from Tom Parker Bowles who declared that he had “long believed that Burts Chips are the finest in the country if not the world”, to seven Michelin-starred French chef Alain Ducasse who describes them as “must-stock essentials”.
And it doesn’t just stop at the crisps; Burts is passionate about its staff, so passionate that it prints the name of the fryer on the back of each eye-catching packet, so look out for Roddy, Jock, Linda and Scott next time you pick up a packet of Burts!
Managing Director Melvyn Glyn commented: “As a brand we don’t like to stand still and that’s why we take product innovation very seriously - we’re constantly researching and devising new flavours in reaction to our customers needs. In the spring we introduced Aberdeen Angus, which went down a storm and this was quickly followed by Pesto this summer- a never seen before flavour in the premium crisp category.”
In Melvyn’s words “you won’t find a crisp with a better crunch” so visit your nearest major supermarket and pick up a bag of Burts, we’re confident you’ll never look back!
