Waitrose is proud to be headline sponsor for Devon Life Food and Drink Awards 2011
By Rebecca Coulson on June 27th 2011
Devon is home to some great examples of locally produced speciality food and drink. Waitrose has long championed the British producer, celebrating small family ventures, and traditional cooking techniques handed down through the generations. We have already held a ‘meet the buyer event’ in partnership with Taste of the West. We encouraged local producers to showcase their products with the prospect of supplying to our new store in Exeter, along with others already open in Devon and the potential to supply over 250 stores UK wide in the future.
The Waitrose reputation has been built, above all, on the quality and freshness of our food. It is what our customers want, and it is what gives us our edge over other supermarkets. Of vital importance to us is the provenance and traceability of the food that is on our shelves. Each of our buyers is an expert in his or her own field. Their job is to seek out the best sources of the best quality food and unusual ingredients that can't be found in other supermarkets.
Much of their time is spent with the farmers, growers and suppliers, building relationships based on trust and respect. Wherever possible our buyers buy British.
We are delighted to be opening our first store in Exeter later this year. You’ll find us on Heavitree Road - can’t wait to meet our new neighbours!
